別名「オオクリガニ」、クリガニ科に属するカニ。
雌と小さい雄、脱皮してすぐのカニは漁獲禁止になっている。漁獲サイズになるまで５年かかる。
肉量が多く、味が良い。リンとカリウムが多く、１００ｇ当たりのタンパク質が１８～１９gで、他のカニよりもかなり多い。
